The short answer

A classified advertisement is a short ad grouped with similar ads under a category heading, such as jobs, property, matrimonial, vehicles or public notices, usually in a dedicated section of a newspaper or website. In Indian newspapers, there are two kinds: text classifieds, priced per word or line with a minimum, and classified display ads, which sit in the same section but use a box, logo, photo or colour and are priced per square centimetre. Classified ads are the cheapest way to advertise in print. A good one leads with the key benefit, gives the essential facts and ends with one clear way to respond.

Types of classified advertisements

Common classified ad categories: jobs, property, matrimonial, vehicles, education, business, name change, obituary, public notice
  • Recruitment: job vacancies and walk-in interviews
  • Property: sale, rent and lease
  • Matrimonial: bride and groom wanted
  • Vehicles: buy and sell
  • Education: coaching, admissions and tuition
  • Business and services: offers, franchise, repairs, services
  • Personal and legal: name change, lost documents, public notices, obituary and remembrance

Text classifieds vs classified display ads

A plain text classified next to a boxed classified display ad with a logo and border

Text classifieds are plain text, priced per word or line with a minimum. For example, releaseMyAd lists Mid-day’s personal text ads at ₹1,503 for the first 15 words, then ₹54 per extra word.

Classified display ads add a border, logo, photo or colour, are priced per sq cm, and stand out more. Mid-day’s minimum is listed at 4 × 5 cm for ₹6,840.

Both attract 5% GST. Rates vary widely by paper and edition; see our guides to the Times of India advertisement, Hindustan Times advertisement and Anandabazar Patrika advertisement for examples.

How to write a classified advertisement

Classified ad template: headline, key facts, offer, contact details
  1. Headline: the category word or main benefit (“2 BHK for rent”, “Sales executives required”)
  2. Key facts: location, size, qualification, price or salary
  3. Offer or reason to act: “immediate joining”, “no brokerage”
  4. One clear call to action: phone, WhatsApp or email (see CTA)

Every word costs money in a text classified, so cut filler.

Common abbreviations

Indian classifieds often use short forms, such as Reqd (required), Exp (experience), Sal (salary), Nego (negotiable), BHK (bedroom, hall, kitchen), Furn (furnished), Nr (near), Opp (opposite) and Urg (urgently). Use them sparingly; unclear abbreviations reduce responses.

Examples

  • Recruitment: “Reqd Sales Executives, Andheri. Exp 1–3 yrs. Sal + incentives. Walk in Mon–Sat 11–4. Ph 98XXXXXXXX”
  • Property: “2 BHK semi-furn flat for rent, nr Baner metro. Family preferred. ₹28,000. No brokerage. WhatsApp 98XXXXXXXX”
  • Business: “AC repair and service at home, Pune. Same-day visit. Call 98XXXXXXXX”

Rules to follow

Classified ads are still ads. The ASCI Code requires them to be truthful and not misleading, and the Consumer Protection Act’s 2022 guidelines on misleading ads apply. Job ads should not promise guaranteed earnings, and property ads should state facts accurately.

Classifieds online

Many newspapers also publish classifieds on their websites and e-papers. For local service businesses, a Google Business Profile and local SEO work like an always-on classified ad.

Checklist

  • Right category chosen
  • Headline, facts, offer and contact included
  • Word or line count checked
  • Claims accurate
  • Paper and edition chosen
  • Contact number tracked
