When WhatsApp Prices Change, and How Much Warning You Get

Most businesses find out that WhatsApp rates have changed when a provider publishes a blog post about it, usually after the fact and usually with a call to action attached.

You do not have to work that way. Meta publishes a pricing calendar with committed notice periods, and it takes about ten minutes a quarter to read.

Four dates a year, and no others

Meta commits to updating pricing only on the first day of a quarter — 1 January, 1 April, 1 July or 1 October. Up to four times a year, and not in between.

Which is more useful than it sounds for anyone building an annual budget. You are not exposed to a change at any moment; you are exposed at four known points, and you will hear about each one in advance.

Three tiers of notice

One month, three months and six months of notice, by change type

The commitment scales with how much work a change forces on you.

A rate card update gets one month. That covers a new rate for a particular market and message category, a change to volume tiers, or a market being moved between pricing regions. It is the most common kind of change and the least disruptive — your systems keep working, the number moves.

A pricing model add-on gets three months. Meta’s own example is the July 2025 introduction of volume tiers for utility and authentication messages. Something new appears that you may want to take advantage of, and you get a quarter to prepare.

A pricing model change gets six months. The example here is the July 2025 shift from conversation-based pricing to per-message pricing — a change that broke every existing forecast and every internal report built on the old unit. Six months is the acknowledgement that this kind of change is an engineering project, not a spreadsheet edit.

Almost nobody knows these commitments exist, which is why a rate change tends to arrive as a surprise even though it was announced.

What has actually happened

The same documentation carries a change history, and reading it tells you roughly what to expect.

Changes have landed in August 2024, October 2024, November 2024, February 2025, April 2025, July 2025 and October 2025, with further rate card updates effective 1 January 2026.

Two things stand out from that list.

Most changes are rate card updates, market by market, and many of them are reductions — utility and authentication rates in particular have moved down across several markets, which Meta describes as pricing on a par with alternative channels for those use cases.

The disruptive changes are rare and well flagged. In two years there has been one pricing model change, and it was announced with six months of notice.

So the honest planning assumption is one or two rate movements a year in your market, and a low probability of anything structural. That is a more stable picture than the discourse around this channel suggests.

Two things specific to India

WhatsApp pricing changes by date over two years

Local billing arrived in January 2026. Meta introduced local billing for eligible customers in India from that point, which is worth checking with your provider if you have not looked at how you are being invoiced.

And a permanent decision worth knowing about before you make it: the currency of an existing WhatsApp Business Account cannot be changed. If you want to bill in a different currency, the only route is to create a new Business Account.

That is the kind of detail that costs nothing to know in advance and a great deal to discover late. Anyone setting up a new account, or considering one for a new market, should decide the currency deliberately rather than accepting a default.

The ten-minute quarterly check

Do this on the first working day of January, April, July and October.

Open Meta’s pricing documentation directly. Not a provider summary, not a newsletter, not this page. The primary source is public and it is the only one in this market without a margin on your messaging.

Check three things. The current rate for your market and each category you use. Any announced updates listed as effective on the next quarter day. And whether any volume tier thresholds relevant to you have moved.

Then check one thing with your provider. Whether their markup percentage has been applied to the new rate or the old one — which is a question worth asking in writing, and one that which provider charge to negotiate covers in more detail.

Ten minutes, four times a year. It replaces every pricing newsletter you are currently subscribed to, and it is the only version that is definitely correct.

How to check a pricing claim you have read somewhere

This is the part worth keeping.

Ask three questions of any pricing claim, including the ones on this site.

Is it dated? Rates without an effective date are unusable, because there have been at least seven changes in two years.

Does it name a market and a category? WhatsApp pricing is market-specific and category-specific. A figure without both is not a figure.

Does it link to Meta’s documentation? If a page tells you what a message costs and does not link to the source, that is a choice.

We have applied those tests to this cluster and found our own errors. Three claims taken from provider pages were wrong, and Meta’s documentation corrected all three. It is a reasonable working assumption that on this topic, secondary sources are wrong more often than they are right.

Questions we get asked

When does Meta change WhatsApp pricing?

Only on the first day of a quarter — 1 January, 1 April, 1 July or 1 October — up to four times a year.

How much notice does Meta give for WhatsApp rate changes?

One month for a rate card update, three months for a pricing model add-on, six months for a change to the pricing model itself.

What is local billing for WhatsApp in India?

Meta introduced local billing for eligible Indian customers from January 2026. How it applies to your account is a question for your provider.

Can you change the currency on a WhatsApp Business Account?

No. The currency of an existing account is fixed, and moving to a different one requires creating a new Business Account.

How do I find Meta’s official WhatsApp rates?

They are published in Meta’s WhatsApp Business Platform pricing documentation, with rate cards by market and category, and a section listing announced future updates.

Do rates only go up?

No. Several utility and authentication rates have been reduced across markets since 2024. Marketing rates in India have risen. It varies by market and category, which is why the source matters more than the summary.

The subscription worth cancelling

If you rely on a provider’s newsletter to tell you when WhatsApp pricing changes, you are receiving the information later than you could, filtered by someone who earns a margin on the answer.

Put four calendar reminders in instead — the first working day of each quarter — and read the source.
