AI Overview Citations: Reddit Has Forty Per Cent
Reported 2026 studies put the top fifteen domains at roughly 68 per cent of AI citation share, with Reddit alone at around 40 per cent. Quora’s reported citation rate is roughly twenty-six times lower, placing it around rank 181 — which matters in India, where Quora is the community platform marketing teams habitually reach for. The unit being cited is a passage rather than a page, so a result ranking first can be quoted for nothing at all.
Our pillar on AI search reports that the sources cited in AI answers overlap surprisingly little with the pages ranking on page one.
This is the article underneath that number. Who is actually being cited, why it is them, and what is left.
Start with the shape of it, because the shape is more extreme than almost anyone expects.
Reported 2026 analyses — assembled from samples running to hundreds of thousands of prompts and, in one case, tens of millions of sources — put the top fifteen domains at roughly 68 per cent of consolidated citation share. Reddit alone is reported at around 40 per cent. YouTube, LinkedIn and Wikipedia are also placed in the top five.
Read that as a constraint rather than a leaderboard. Two-thirds of all citation is already allocated to platforms you cannot become. The competition is for the third that remains, and every business, publisher and institution on the open web is in it.
That is a harder market than search. It is also a more honest picture than the one being sold, which implies a slot is available if you optimise correctly.
The finding an Indian team should act on first

Now the part that ought to change somebody’s content plan this week.
Reddit’s reported citation rate is roughly twenty-six times Quora’s. Quora is reported to sit somewhere around rank 181 among measured domains.
That is an uncomfortable number in this market, because Quora has been the community platform Indian marketing teams reach for. It is familiar, it has real Indian traffic, agencies have offered Quora answering as a service for years, and it feels like the obvious place to demonstrate expertise in public.
For the purpose of being cited by an AI system, it is doing very little.
Meanwhile the platform doing the heavy lifting is one many Indian B2B teams have never seriously used. Some of that is habit, and some of it is that Reddit’s Indian communities are smaller and younger than its American ones — which is a real caveat we return to at the end.
We are not saying stop answering questions on Quora if it brings you business directly. We are saying stop counting it as AI search work, because the data does not support that.
Why community platforms dominate at all
The concentration is not arbitrary, and understanding why makes the rest of this actionable.
Consider what a question actually needs. Somebody asks which of two systems is better for a mid-sized manufacturer, or whether a service is worth the money, or what goes wrong with something in practice.
An answer to that requires comparison, experience and disagreement. Vendor pages structurally cannot supply it. A company saying its own product is the best is not evidence, and a retrieval system assembling a balanced answer has no reason to treat it as such.
Community platforms supply exactly what the vendor page cannot: several people, no commercial stake, describing what actually happened. Video supplies demonstration. Reference sites supply settled facts.
So the concentration reflects what the format needs, rather than a preference for particular brands. That is worth knowing, because it tells you which questions you could ever be cited for and which you could not.
The unit is the passage, not the page
Here is the mechanism most GEO writing misses, and it explains the divergence better than any other single fact.
An AI answer is assembled from several sources, each supporting a different claim within it. Source one carries the definition. Source two carries the number. Source three carries the exception. They are not competing to be the best page on the subject. Each is supplying one sentence.
Which produces two consequences that feel wrong at first.
A page at position one can be cited for nothing. If it is well-optimised, thorough, and never states a single clean falsifiable fact in a self-contained sentence, there is nothing in it to lift.
A page nobody ranks can be cited repeatedly for one sentence buried in its middle — a specific figure, a clearly stated rule, a named exception.
So the question to ask of your own pages is not which single sentence in each one would survive being extracted, attributed and shown on its own.
Most business pages contain none. They contain claims about being trusted, experienced and committed to excellence, which cannot be quoted because they cannot be checked.
What is actually available to you

Given all of that, four things are worth doing and none of them is a product.
Be on other people’s lists. A large share of commercial questions — best X in India, top providers of Y — are answered from third-party compilations rather than from vendor sites. Being included in someone else’s list is worth more here than publishing your own, which is an unusual reversal and a cheap one to act on.
Participate where your buyers actually are, as a person. On community platforms this means genuine participation by somebody who does the work, in threads they would have read anyway. Two cautions, both firm. Marketing posts are removed and accounts are banned, so this cannot be delegated to an agency posting on your behalf. And manufactured accounts are against platform rules and detectable, which makes astroturfing a bad idea on ethics and on arithmetic.
Most agencies cannot staff this. We are including it because it works, not because we can sell it.
Say things that can be quoted. One specific, self-contained, checkable statement per page. A number you measured, a rule with its exception, a timeline with its condition.
Keep being mentioned. The slower route, and the one we have written about in what to send a journalist — which the pillar re-prices, since mentions now do work beyond the links they eventually produce.
Video, and the cheapest version of it
YouTube sits in the reported top five, and it is the most under-used item on this list for Indian B2B firms.
The mechanism is unglamorous. A video with a transcript is a text source with a face attached. It supplies demonstration, which a written page cannot, and it carries a named person, which makes attribution easy.
The expensive version of acting on this is a content studio and a production calendar. The cheap version is better and almost nobody does it: record the explanation you already give on sales calls.
Every business has four or five explanations it delivers weekly — how the process works, what the common mistake is, why the obvious approach fails. They are already rehearsed, already accurate, and already pitched at exactly the person asking the question. Recorded plainly, with a real transcript rather than an auto-generated one, they become the material that gets drawn on.
Production value is not the variable here. Whether anything specific is said is the variable.
The thing being sold that you should decline
Wikipedia is in the reported top five, and a market has grown in India around getting businesses listed on it.
Decline it.
Wikipedia’s notability requirements mean most businesses do not qualify, and its rules on paid and undisclosed editing are strict. Pages created this way are routinely deleted, and the attempt can attract attention to the account and the subject rather than away from them.
There is a legitimate version, and it is passive: if your business becomes genuinely notable — sustained independent coverage, not press releases — a page tends to appear without your involvement. That is downstream of the work described in what to send a journalist, and it is not a service anyone can sell you.
The same reasoning applies to the broader pattern. Where a platform holds a large share of citation, the instinct is to buy a position on it. On every one of these platforms, buying is either prohibited, detectable or both.
The caveat that matters most here

Nearly all of this data is US-weighted, and we would rather say so plainly than let the numbers travel further than they should.
The studies sample English-language prompts, largely from American users, drawing on communities where American participation is enormous. Reddit’s dominance is partly a reflection of a platform with deep American community coverage answering questions asked by Americans.
An Indian buyer asking about GST software, a Mumbai-specific service, or something in Hindi is drawing on a different pool. Which subreddits, forums and Indian sites feed those answers is unexamined, and we have not found a study that addresses it.
That gap is genuinely an opportunity — the Indian communities feeding Indian answers are almost certainly less contested than the American ones — and it is also a reason to check for yourself rather than to trust the ranking above.
The manual method in our pillar exists for that: run your own questions, in your own market, and see who is actually named.
What we cannot tell you
We cannot vouch for the precise figures. They come from vendors selling AI visibility tools, and although the sample sizes are disclosed and several independent efforts point the same way, the methods are not fully published.
We cannot tell you whether the concentration reflects genuine usefulness or commercial arrangements between platforms and AI companies. Both are plausible and neither is disclosed.
And we cannot tell you the Indian numbers, because nobody has published them.
Final thoughts
Two-thirds of citation is already taken. Of the platforms holding it, one is a community site most Indian marketing teams do not use, and the one they do use is ranked around a hundred and eightieth.
That is worth an hour of reallocation on its own.
Then stop writing pages designed to cover everything and start writing pages containing at least one sentence somebody could lift, attribute to you, and defend.
