How to Increase YouTube Subscribers: Find the Videos That Convert

How to increase YouTube subscribers for a business channel: track subscribers per 1,000 views, repeat the videos that convert, avoid tactics that backfire.

The short answer

To increase YouTube subscribers, find out which of your videos turn viewers into subscribers, then make more like them. In YouTube Studio, compare subscribers gained per 1,000 views for each video. The winners are usually videos that solve a clear problem and promise more of the same. Put a specific subscribe reason inside those videos, link them with playlists and end screens, and post on a steady schedule. Don’t buy subscribers: they don’t watch, and YouTube’s systems reward watching.

Why subscribers matter for a business channel

Subscribers aren’t the goal. Leads are. But subscribers help in two ways:

  • They see new uploads first, which gives each video a starting audience
  • They signal trust. A buyer checking your channel before a call notices 12 subscribers versus 12,000

For creators, subscribers are also a monetisation requirement. YouTube’s Partner Program needs 1,000 subscribers plus 4,000 public watch hours in 12 months, or 10 million Shorts views in 90 days. India also has an expanded tier starting at 500 subscribers. Most businesses don’t need ad revenue, but the numbers are a useful benchmark.

The Subscriber Rate

Here’s the metric we use:

Formula: subscribers gained divided by views, multiplied by 1,000.

Subscriber rate = subscribers gained ÷ views × 1,000

Where to find it: YouTube Studio › Content › pick a video › Analytics › Audience. Or add “Subscribers” as a column in Advanced mode.

Worked example (illustrative), for a Pune coaching institute:

  • “JEE Main mock test analysis”: 20,000 views, 60 subscribers → 3 per 1,000
  • “How to make a 6-month JEE study plan”: 8,000 views, 96 subscribers → 12 per 1,000
  • “Our annual day highlights”: 1,500 views, 1 subscriber → 0.7 per 1,000

The study-plan video converts four times better than the mock analysis, even with fewer views. It promises ongoing help, so viewers subscribe for the next one. That’s the format to repeat.

Why some videos convert and others don’t

They promise a series. “Part 1 of our home-buying series” gives a reason to subscribe.

They solve a recurring problem. Tax filing, exam prep, fitness, business growth. Viewers expect to come back.

The channel is focused. If the last 10 videos cover 10 unrelated topics, a viewer can’t predict what they’ll get.

The video is good enough to finish. Viewers who reach the end are the ones who subscribe. Improve watch time and subscriptions usually follow.

Seven ways to raise the subscriber rate

1. Give a specific reason. Not “please like and subscribe”. Try “We post one GST update every Monday. Subscribe so you don’t miss the next one.”

A YouTube video screen with a caption giving a specific reason to subscribe: one GST update every Monday.

2. Ask at the right moment. After you’ve delivered something useful, not in the first 10 seconds.

3. Use end screens. Add a subscribe element and a “next video” element to every long video. See our guide to end screens.

4. Build playlists as series. “Home loan basics: 6 videos” keeps people watching your content in order.

5. Post on a schedule viewers can predict. Weekly is enough for most businesses.

6. Use Shorts as a trailer. A Short that teases the long video, then links to it, brings viewers who may subscribe after the full video.

7. Reply to comments. Early comment replies build a community feel, and many subscribers come from people who felt heard.

Getting your first 1,000

The first thousand are the hardest because YouTube has little data about who likes your videos.

A four-step path: narrow topic, search videos, share with customers, collaborate.
  • Pick one narrow topic. “Interior design for 2BHK flats in Mumbai”, not “home and lifestyle”
  • Answer search questions first. Search videos bring viewers who already want the topic. See YouTube content ideas
  • Share with people who already know you. Customers, email list, WhatsApp broadcast, LinkedIn. Early viewers who watch fully help YouTube understand your audience
  • Collaborate. A guest appearance with a relevant creator or partner business introduces you to their audience

What not to do

Buying subscribers. Fake accounts never watch. Your watch time and engagement fall relative to subscribers, and YouTube’s policies ban fake engagement.

Sub-for-sub groups. Subscribers who aren’t interested in your topic dilute your audience signals.

Clickbait titles. They may lift clicks once. Viewers who feel misled leave, and YouTube’s system measures satisfaction, not just clicks.

Deleting old videos to “clean up”. Unless a video is harmful or wrong, leave it. It may still bring search views.

How long does it take?

For a business channel posting weekly, a few hundred subscribers in the first six months is common. Growth tends to jump when one video finds a search or recommendation audience. Keep the rate, not the total, as your weekly number.

Checklist

  • Subscriber rate calculated for every video in the last six months
  • Top three converting formats identified
  • Next five videos planned in those formats
  • Specific subscribe reason scripted for each video
  • End screens on every long video
  • Playlists set up as series
  • Weekly upload day fixed
  • No bought subscribers or sub-for-sub

Questions we get asked

Do Shorts help gain subscribers?

They can bring new viewers quickly. Whether those viewers subscribe as readily as long-form viewers varies by channel, so compare your own subscriber rates by format.

How many subscribers does a business channel need?

There’s no minimum. A channel with 800 of the right subscribers can drive more leads than one with 80,000 of the wrong ones.

Should we ask for subscribers in every video?

Yes, briefly, with a specific reason, after delivering value.

Final thoughts

Stop chasing the total. Track subscribers per 1,000 views, make more of what converts, and let YouTube marketing do the compounding.
