Instagram Hashtags for Business: Choosing Your Five

Instagram hashtags for business: the limit is now five per post. How many to use, which five to pick, and why hashtags no longer drive reach.

The short answer

Use up to five hashtags per post. That is now the maximum: Instagram introduced a five-hashtag limit on posts and Reels in December 2025. Put them in the caption. Choose specific tags that describe the post, not huge generic ones. And adjust your expectations: Instagram’s head, Adam Mosseri, said in February 2025 that hashtags don’t improve visibility. They help Instagram understand and file your post. Reach comes from watch time, likes and sends.

Key takeaways

  • Five is the cap, not a target. Three good tags beat five weak ones
  • Hashtags are labels. They tell Instagram what a post is about; they don’t push it to more people
  • Use the 1-2-2 rule: one branded, two topic, two community or location tags
  • Skip giant tags like #love or #instagood. Your post disappears in them
  • Keywords in your caption do more for discovery than any hashtag

What changed, and why

For years, the advice was to use up to 30 hashtags. Brands pasted the same block of 30 under every post.

Two things ended that. In February 2025, Mosseri said hashtags “don’t improve visibility”, while still calling them useful for letting people know what a post is about. Then in December 2025, Instagram capped hashtags at five per post and Reel. Reports of the rollout quoted Mosseri’s line: “Quality over quantity is key.”

The reasoning is simple. Long hashtag blocks were used to game distribution, and they made hashtags useless for the people browsing them.

What hashtags still do

They classify your post. A tag like #ayurvedicskincare tells Instagram’s systems the topic, alongside your caption and on-screen text.

They make you findable on hashtag pages. Some users still browse or search hashtags. A specific tag with a real community, like #punefoodie, puts you in front of people already interested.

They group your own content. A branded tag (#BloomBakesMumbai) lets customers and you collect posts in one place, useful for user-generated content and contests.

What they don’t do anymore is push a weak post to more people. For that, look at holding attention in the first seconds and keywords in captions.

The 1-2-2 rule

Here’s how we pick five hashtags for a business post.

Diagram showing one branded hashtag, two topic hashtags and two community or location hashtags.

1 branded tag. Your brand or campaign tag. Only if you actually use it consistently. If not, skip it and use four.

2 topic tags. Specific descriptions of what the post is about. Not #food, but #egglesscakes or #sourdoughbread. Not #fitness, but #strengthtrainingforwomen.

2 community or location tags. Where your buyers are, or the group they belong to. #mumbaibakers, #bangalorestartups, #punemoms, #gstupdates.

Worked examples (illustrative):

  • A Bandra home bakery, Reel of a custom cake: #BloomBakesMumbai #customcakes #egglesscakes #mumbaifoodie #bandra
  • A B2B SaaS company, carousel on GST e-invoicing: #einvoicing #gstcompliance #financeteams #indiansmes (four tags, no branded one)
  • A Pune fitness studio, Reel of a form tip: #deadliftform #strengthtraining #punefitness #kothrud

Notice the pattern: every tag is something a real person might browse or search. None is there just to add volume.

How to find the right tags

Search the tag on Instagram. Look at the top posts. If they’re about your topic, it’s a fit. If they’re spam or unrelated, skip it.

Check the size. Tags with tens of millions of posts are too broad. Tags with a handful of posts have no audience. Look for tags where recent posts are relevant and active.

Watch your competitors and customers. What do your best customers tag when they post about your category?

Use your own words consistently. Build a small bank of 15 to 20 tested tags per content pillar. Rotate within it.

Caption or comment?

Caption. Instagram’s own search advice is to put keywords and hashtags in captions, not comments. Place them at the end so the first line stays clean and readable.

Reels hashtags

The same five-tag limit applies to Reels. Reels are recommended mostly to non-followers based on how people respond to them, so hashtags matter even less there. Use two or three precise ones, and put more effort into the spoken words, on-screen text and caption.

Mistakes to avoid

Recycling one block of hashtags on every post. Each post should be tagged for what it is actually about.

Using banned or broken tags. Some tags are restricted because of spam. Tap a tag before using it. If recent posts are hidden, drop it.

Tagging trends unrelated to your post. Jumping on #IPL for a tax-filing carousel confuses the classifier and the people who tap the tag.

Blaming hashtags for a reach drop. They’re rarely the cause. Check Account Status and your content first. We cover the routine for reach drops.

When to skip hashtags entirely

If a tag doesn’t describe the post precisely, leave it out. Zero hashtags is fine. A post with a strong caption keyword and no hashtags will do better than one with five vague ones.

Checklist

  • Five or fewer hashtags
  • At least two specific topic tags
  • One or two community or location tags
  • Branded tag only if used consistently
  • Each tag checked on Instagram for relevance
  • Hashtags placed in the caption, at the end
  • A tested tag bank per content pillar

Questions we get asked

Do hashtags still work on Instagram?

They still help Instagram categorise posts and help people browsing a topic find you. They no longer increase reach on their own.

What happens if I add more than five?

Instagram’s limit applies to posts and Reels, so you won’t be able to publish with more than five.

Should every post have a branded hashtag?

Only if customers use it too, or you run campaigns around it. Otherwise it’s a wasted slot.
