The short answer

YouTube ads in India have no fixed price. You set a budget and a bid in Google Ads, and the auction decides the rest. What you pay for depends on the format. With skippable in-stream ads you pay when someone watches 30 seconds (or the whole ad if it’s shorter) or interacts. With bumper and non-skippable ads you pay per 1,000 impressions. Indian agencies report roughly ₹0.50 to ₹3 per view for skippable ads and ₹400 to ₹900 per 1,000 impressions for bumpers and non-skippables. Google doesn’t publish these rates, so treat them as starting estimates. A sensible test budget is ₹1,000 to ₹3,000 a day for two to four weeks.

How Google charges for each format

This part is fact, from Google Ads Help:

Comparison of paying per view on skippable ads versus per 1,000 impressions on bumper ads.
  • Skippable in-stream: cost-per-view bidding. You pay when a viewer watches 30 seconds, or the whole ad if under 30 seconds, or interacts. Skips before that are free
  • Non-skippable in-stream (15–60 seconds): Target CPM. You pay per 1,000 impressions
  • Bumper (up to 6 seconds): Target CPM
  • In-feed video: you pay when someone clicks to watch, or, in Video View campaigns, when it autoplays for at least 10 seconds
  • Shorts ads: CPV or Target CPM, depending on the campaign
  • Masthead: CPM or cost per hour, booked through Google sales

This matters for budgeting. With skippable ads, a weak hook costs you little because people skip for free. With bumpers, you pay for every impression whether it lands or not.

What Indian advertisers report paying

Google doesn’t publish average costs, and they change with auctions. The best public figures come from agencies reporting their own campaigns.

Mediaverse Digital, an Indian agency, reports ₹0.50 to ₹3 per view for skippable in-stream and ₹400 to ₹900 per 1,000 impressions for bumpers and non-skippables, and suggests ₹1,000 to ₹3,000 a day as a starting budget. These are one agency’s figures, not Google’s. Your costs will depend on the factors below.

What makes YouTube ads cost more or less

Audience. Narrow, high-value audiences (business decision-makers, luxury home buyers) cost more than broad ones.

Five factors that move YouTube ad costs: audience, season, creative, language and region, campaign goal.

Placement competition. Festive season, IPL weeks and year-end sales push CPMs up as more brands bid.

Creative quality. On skippable ads, if people watch past 30 seconds more often, your cost per view doesn’t fall. But your cost per useful result does, because you’re paying for engaged viewers. A strong opening helps; see the first five seconds.

Language and region. Hindi and regional-language campaigns in tier 2 cities can reach audiences at different rates from English metro campaigns. Test both.

Goal. Campaigns optimising for conversions (leads, sales) usually have higher cost per view than awareness campaigns, but should deliver cheaper leads.

Three budget scenarios (illustrative)

These use mid-points of the agency-reported ranges. Your results will differ.

Three budget cards for a D2C launch, a coding bootcamp and a real estate remarketing campaign in rupees.

A. Launch awareness: a D2C snack brand, 15 days

Bumper ads at ~₹650 per 1,000 impressions, ₹2,000/day → ₹30,000 total → about 46,000 impressions.

B. Consideration: a Bangalore coding bootcamp, 30 days

Skippable in-stream at ~₹1.50 per view, ₹2,500/day → ₹75,000 → about 50,000 paid views of 30 seconds or more.

C. Remarketing: a Thane real estate project, 30 days

Skippable ads showing a site-walkthrough video to website visitors, ₹1,000/day → ₹30,000. Smaller audience, higher cost per view, but viewers are already interested.

Per view, YouTube is often cheaper than a click on Google Search, because a view isn’t a visit. Compare at the level that matters: cost per lead or cost per sale.

  • Google Search captures people already looking. See Google Ads cost in India
  • Meta is often cheaper for fast lead forms. See Meta ads cost in India
  • YouTube is strongest for explaining a considered purchase and for remarketing with a demo

How to avoid wasting budget

Start with skippable ads. You only pay for people who chose to keep watching.

Exclude kids’ content and irrelevant placements. Review where your ads ran after the first week.

Put the brand and offer in the first five seconds. Most viewers see only that much.

Use a clear next step. Link to a landing page or WhatsApp, not your home page.

Test two or three creatives. Keep the one with the best cost per result after two weeks.

Checklist

  • Goal chosen (awareness, consideration or leads)
  • Format chosen based on how you want to pay
  • Budget of at least ₹1,000/day for 2–4 weeks for a fair test
  • Two or three creatives with brand and offer in the first five seconds
  • Placement exclusions set
  • Landing page or WhatsApp link with UTM tags
  • Review after 7 and 14 days on cost per result

Questions we get asked

What’s the minimum budget for YouTube ads in India?

Google doesn’t set a high minimum. For meaningful data, plan ₹1,000 to ₹3,000 a day for two to four weeks.

Do I pay if someone skips my ad?

Not for skippable in-stream ads if they skip before 30 seconds (or before the end of a shorter ad) and don’t interact.

How do YouTube ads compare with Instagram ads on cost?

It depends on audience and goal. Compare cost per lead, not cost per view.
